Fitdigits gives you the ability to turn on/off both visual and audio heart rate zone alerts, and in iOS pace zones as well. You can also manage the amount of information that is spoken when zone transitions happen in the transition, so that you can hear both the Zone number and the range (and now Zone name for Star members), or just one or the other.
For beginners, hearing the range set for the zone is often interesting, and in fact when you hear the zone boundaries, you can tell if you are rising into the zone or descending into the zone. For example, if you are going up to Zone 3, you would hear the zone range from the lowest point to the highest “Entering Zone 3 from 128 to 145”; if you were descending to Zone 3, the audio would read the zone from highest to lowest, thus say “Entering Zone 3 from 145 to 128”.
After a while zone ranges can be a bit verbose, so many will shut them off and just hear the zone number (or name*) spoken as they change zones.
On your iOS device, you can also customize further with Custom Interval Structured Workouts by enabling heart zone transition alerts and the number of seconds to be notified leading up to a transition as well as the duration of the visible alert for Custom Structured Workouts you define.
Audio and visual transition notifications are set on a per activity basis, so you can customize depending on the sport.
ZONE TRANSITION VOICE ALERTS
Select the workout type you want to configure, then tap the gear / settings icon. Tap Voice Feedback.
Zone Transitions: Turns on or off the options below for Zone Transitions.
Zone Number: Announce the zone number on transition.
Zone Name*: Star members – announce the zone name on transition. Works with custom zone names too!
Zone Range: Announce the range associated with the zone on transition. As you learn more about your heart rate, this becomes less necessary, however the way the range is said, in either descending or ascending order, matches the direction of the transition. For example “Entering Zone 1 from 118 to 98” means you went from above Zone 1 down to Zone 1, If the numbers were read as “98 to 118” it indicates you are rising into the zone.
Visual Alerts for heart rate zone transitions are found in the Heart Rate Zones section (Gear (Activity Options) > Dashboards & Zones > Heart Rate Zones.
Zone Visual Alert: Do you want to be visually prompted when you change zones? Yes / No
Zone Audio Alert: Do you want to be prompted by a chime when you change zones? Yes / No
Zone Local Notifications: Do you want local notifications (when the app is in the background) to show when you change zones? Yes / No
